GSM carriers test SnapTrack service

PARIS-SnapTrack Inc. said an international consortium of Global System for Mobile communications wireless carriers and equipment manufacturers are preparing to evaluate SnapTrack’s Wireless Assisted Global Positioning System technology, which provides services such as location-based billing, mobile directory and roadside assistance and vehicle fleet management.

France Telecom Mobiles is hosting the technology trials. Prototype GSM handsets will be used by SnapTrack GSM Test Group members to also test Wireless Application Protocol services augmentation and gateway compatibility, and the exchange of location information between system elements via short message service, the company said.

Carrier members of the SnapTrack GSM Test Group consortium include Vodafone AirTouch plc, BellSouth Mobility DCS, BT Cellnet, Esat Digifone, Omnitel Pronto Italia, T-Mobil, Telecel and Telefonica. Equipment manufacturers include CMG Telecommunications, Nortel Networks, Motorola Inc. Texas Instruments and Siemens Information and Communications Networks.
