Telecom equipment sales grow 26 percent

ARLINGTON, Va.-First-quarter U.S. factory sales of telecommunications equipment topped $24.6 million, which represents an increase of 26 percent from the same period last year, according to statistics released by The Telecommunications Industry Association.

U.S. exports of telecom equipment during the first quarter totaled nearly $6.2 billion, an 18-percent increase from first-quarter 1999 exports, said TIA.

“A 26-percent increase in factory sales of telecom equipment for the first quarter, including a healthy 18-percent growth in exports, is proof that the communications industry is powering the new economy,” said Matthew J. Flanigan, TIA president. “The significant jump in imports-up 77 percent over last year’s first quarter-is a further testament to the expansion of the U.S. telecom market.”
