Due to an anticipated decrease in domestic South Korean sales related to the elimination of phone subsidies, Qualcomm Inc. expects lower order levels for its Code Division Multiple Access chipsets in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2000. Qualcomm said it did not expect the potential decline in orders to affect pro forma earnings in the third quarter of fiscal 2000.
Alltel Corp. completed the transfer of its personal communications services operations in Mobile, Ala., and Pensacola, Fla., to Cellular South. The transfer eliminates the overlap of wireless operations that would have existed following Alltel’s property swaps with Bell Atlantic Corp., GTE Corp. and Vodafone AirTouch plc. Alltel noted that Cellular South will provide existing customers with wireless phones, at no charge, that operate on the company’s Time Division Multiple Access digital system.
Adaptive Broadband Corp. entered an agreement with Vislink plc to sell its microwave radio communications division for $19.2 million in cash, Adaptive Broadband said. Adaptive Broadband has entered previous agreements to also sell its EFData satellite modem division and microwave data systems division. “With the divestiture of our three legacy businesses nearly behind us, we can focus on continuing to form the types of strategic partnerships we need to maintain our lead in the emerging wireless broadband market,” said Donna S. Birks, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Adaptive Broadband. Vislink is a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of broadcast and telecommunications equipment. The transaction is expected to close in July, the company said.
Metrocall Inc. formed a partnership with Icefog Inc. that calls for Icefog to distribute Metrocall wireless messaging products and services to medium and large corporate accounts via its various distribution channels. Distribution channels include an online e-commerce site operated by Newsfire.com, Icefog’s wireless content provider. Newsfire.com will deliver news and information to clients, as well as resell both Icefog and Metrocall services.
