LONDON-British mobile provider BT Cellnet reported a 34- percent increase in new mobile- phone customers for the second quarter of this year compared with the same time frame last year.
According to the company, 670,000 new customers signed up for wireless service during the second quarter, with 175,00 of those new connections via mobile Internet sales.
In addition, BT Cellnet said 200,000 people have bought mobile Internet phones in the United Kingdom to date, and estimates it has secured 90 percent of the wireless Internet market.
“These early adopters are proving to be heavier users compared to traditional voice-only customers,” noted Peter Erskine, managing director of BT Cellnet. “It is important in such an environment to be first to market to capture these high quality consumers, and puts us in a strong position as the next phase of the mobile market develops.”
