BOSTON-Western Wireless Corp. and Nortel Networks will conduct a rural fixed wireless access trial using cdma2000 third-generation digital radio technology.
The trial, scheduled to take place in Minnesota and South Dakota, is expected to accelerate commercialization of wireless enhanced voice and high-speed data services from Time Division Multiple Access operator Western Wireless by verifying the performance of 1XRTT technology.
“Because of the potential benefits in call carrying capacity and data speeds offered by 1XRTT technology, Western Wireless is committed to evaluating this evolutionary 3G technology,” explained Mikal Thomsen, president and chief operating officer of Western Wireless. “This trial with Nortel Networks will enable us to utilize our current cellular system infrastructure to achieve our goal of high-speed wireless data transmission.”
The trial is expected to take place during the fourth quarter.
