Motorola Inc. was awarded a $21 million expansion contract from Intercellular Nigeria Ltd. to supply and deploy a Code Division Multiple Access fixed wireless loop network in Nigeria. Motorola’s Network Solutions Sector said it will deploy its CDMA WiLL infrastructure at 800 MHz providing an expanded system capacity for up to 45,000 limited mobility subscribers.
France
Broadband communications provider Teligent Inc. and its French partners LDCOM Networks and Artemis won eight regional spectrum licenses to provide high-bandwidth fixed wireless data and voice services in markets throughout France. The licenses, which are in the 24.5 GHz to 26.5 GHz spectrum band, cover business centers including Marseilles, Lyon, Nice, Strasbourg, Sophia and Antipolis.
China
Motorola Inc.’s Network Solutions Sector signed 10 digital cellular network expansion contracts with China Unicom valued at a total of $300 million. Under the terms of the contracts, Motorola will expand China Unicom’s Global System for Mobile communications 900 networks in eight Chinese provinces with a population of 421 million people. The provinces include Guangdong, Fujian, Shandong, Jiangsu, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shanxi and Xinjiang, as well as China’s special economic zone of Shenzhen. Motorola also said it will deploy GSM 1800 systems for China Unicom in Shandong and Guangdong province, the first GSM 1800 deployments for China Unicom.
NEC Corp. and The Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission, which is part of the Ministry of Information Industry of China, reported the beginning of a wideband Code Division Multiple Access technical trial in China. NEC said it plans to hold discussions concerning the possibilities of strategic alliances in W-CDMA and to construct an optimum marketing structure for the technology.
