Pathnet

Pathnet Telecommunications named Ken Rowen vice president of sales, focusing on competitive local access carriers. Rowen will lead a team responsible for integrating CLECs, regional bell operating companies and independent telephone companies into the Pathnet network in under-served regions of the country. Rowen developed a strategic direction for the wholesale business at Citizens Communications prior to joining Pathnet.

Simple Communications

Prepaid wireless service provider Simple Communications L.L.C. promoted John Smith to director of operations. Smith will be accountable for locating and negotiating office locations, managing the launch of new markets, maintaining company Web sites, designing and producing print materials and coordinating activities with regional sales directors and market managers. Prior to joining Simple, Smith was print shop manager of Sunbelt Business Forms.

Leap Wireless

Stewart Hutcheson was appointed senior vice president of Leap Wireless International Inc.’s wireless data development business. Hutcheson, previously vice president of business development for Leap, will head the company’s analysis of investments and strategic alliances currently focused on bringing mobile data services and devices to customers across the country. Prior to joining Leap, Hutcheson established and led the marketing and international operations group in Qualcomm Inc.’s wireless infrastructure division.

Carlson

Mission-critical infrastructure provider Carlson announced that Larry Hinman has joined the company as a manager, responsible for delivery of application and network solutions for the telecommunications marketplace. Hinman goes to Carlson from Cisco Systems Inc., where he was a systems engineer, providing Cisco engineering and technical support to GTE/Bell Atlantic/Verizon engineers throughout the southern United States. Carlson also announced that David Sturgis joined the company as a project manager. He will be responsible for the implementation of telecommunication application and network solutions. Sturgis was a manager at Unisys Corp., where he was responsible for projects in the southern region.

Cell-Loc

Cell-Loc Inc., a developer of wireless location products, announced a number of appointments to the company. Lew Turnquist, currently executive vice president at Cell-Loc, was named chief operating officer. Peter Allen was named vice president of business development and sales, and he will be based at Cell-Loc’s Dallas office. Prior to joining the company, Allen was founder and vice president of services marketing at Saraid Inc. and founder and vice president of business development at New North Media. Claudio Rodrigues was appointed vice president of marketing at Cell-Loc. Rodrigues developed and implemented the Membership Rewards program for American Express Canada.

Jim George, currently vice president of business development at Cell-Loc, was named vice president of geomatics, where he will be responsible for developing new wireless positioning techniques. Ned Benner, currently acting vice president of deployment, was officially named to that position. Benner spent 10 years prior to joining Cell-Loc at Telus Mobility Inc., a Canadian telecommunications carrier. Cell-Loc also named Ora Zabloski vice president of people. Before joining the company, Zabloski was vice president of people and corporate resources at FutureLink.

AirNet Communications

John Berens and Richard Beckley were appointed to senior executive positions at AirNet Communications Corp., a provider of software-defined, broadband wireless base station products. Berens will assume the position of chief financial officer from Gerald Hattori, who is leaving AirNet to pursue other interests. Berens most recently served as vice president for Glenayre Technologies, where he was responsible for managing the company’s global financial needs. Beckley was named vice president of international sales, a new position, where he will focus on expanding AirNet’s presence in the global wireless market. Beckley was senior vice president of worldwide sales at Telular Corp.

Wilkinson Barker Knauer

Lauren Belvin, senior majority counsel to Republican Arizona Senator John McCain, joined the law firm of Wilkinson Barker Knauer L.L.P. as a partner, where she will become involved in all aspects of the firm’s national and international telecommunications representation. Prior to her work with the Subcommittee on Communications, Belvin worked at the Federal Communications Commission in a variety of senior level positions, including legal adviser to three chairmen and two commissioners, director of the office of legislative affairs and deputy general counsel.

VisionAir

Russel Akins has joined VisionAir as chief technology officer, where he will oversee the development of all design standards for the company’s wireless software solutions, including the migration from a client-server architecture to a Web-enabled, multi-tiered platform. Akins was a vice president of applications for BellSouth Corp., where he was responsible for the programming and support of all information technology systems, while overseeing a work force of 2,000 employees and a budget of $800 million.

GTE

GTE Telecommunication Services Inc. named Michael Hartman its president. He will assume overall responsibility for leading the company. Prior to his new role at GTE, Hartman was president for the company’s southeast wireless division.

SCC Communications

John Jarboe was promoted to vice president of advanced technology at SCC Communications Corp., a provider of enhanced 911 database management services. Jarboe will lead an advanced technology team that will include system architecture and senior product management in the development and delivery of a technical foundation for SCC’s

SafetyNet products and services. Before his promotion, Jarboe served as vice president of engineering, where he was responsible for software development, quality assurance, technical support and publications. SCC also announced that Susan Cottingham was promoted to vice president of software engineering, where she will oversee software development, technical publications and quality assurance for SCC service offerings and software products. Cottingham was director of software engineering before her promotion.

PacketVideo

PacketVideo Corp. named three executives to lead its marketing, public relations and corporate development activities. Fernando Corona joins the company as senior vice president of marketing, where he will concentrate on maximizing the numerous relationships that PacketVideo has announced, as well as building the company’s brand into an international symbol of wireless technology. Prior to joining PacketVideo, Corona founded The Next Vision Inc., a consulting company providing strategic and tactical business planning services. Anjeanette Rettig was named vice president of corporate communications at PacketVideo, where she will focus her efforts on capitalizing on the interest the company has generated in the media/technology space. Rettig will represent PacketVideo with analysts, investors, the technology and business media, and all of the company’s target audience. Rettig was executive director of corporate communications for Intervu, a media and technology company. Vern Stevenson joins PacketVideo as vice president of corporate development, where he be responsible for directing strategic relationships, mergers, acquisitions and minority investments in companies that will support the long-term strategic direction and growth of PacketVideo. Stevenson was vice president of Siemens Mustang Ventures, where he was responsible for venture capital investments in the information and communications space for the Americas.

CellStar

CellStar Corp. announced that Daniel Bogar, the company’s senior vice president and president of its Americas Region, resigned. CellStar said it has initiated a search to identify qualified ca
ndidates to replace Bogar. In the interim, Richard Marriott, currently vice president and general manager of CellStar’s U.S. operations, will head the company’s North America Region, with E. Lee Ittner, vice president of Latin America sales and marketing, overseeing the Latin America Region. CellStar also reported it accepted the resignation of Timothy Maretti, the company’s former senior vice president and president of its Brazil Region. The company said it is exiting the Brazilian market and intends to divest its 51-percent interest in its joint ventures in the region.

Flarion Technologies

Peter Carson joined Flarion Technologies, a wireless data technology supplier for mobile Internet applications, as vice president of business development, where he will be responsible for cultivating new business alliances for Flarion, with a dual responsibility for the company’s marketing functions. Prior to joining Flarion, Carson was vice president of business development and marketing at ArrayComm, a broadband technologies provider.

Zucotto Systems

Java semiconductor solutions provider Zucotto Systems Inc. named Dennis Abremski vice president of business development, where he will be responsible for overseeing the company’s global business development team, forming alliances with industry partners and signing agreements with customers. Abremski was director of business development for Wireless Knowledge, where he oversaw strategic business development and product planning, including securing agreements with wireless carriers for the launch of the company’s joint venture with Microsoft Corp. Zucotto also appointed Tim Peachey vice president and general manager of its San Diego global business center. Peachey’s responsibilities will include ensuring the company’s infrastructure is in place for product engineering and manufacturing, working with the global development teams on exercising common processes for project work and overseeing materials and services for the completion of contracts. Peachey worked as an advanced packaging applications engineer at Nortel Networks Corp. prior to joining Zucotto.

SigmaOne Communications

Mark Furnari joined SigmaOne Communications Corp., a provider of network-based location solutions for wireless operators, as senior director of carrier business development. Furnari will spearhead all activities related to business development for North American wireless carriers in his new position. Previously, Furnari was the national sales manager for AT&T consumer products. SigmaOne also appointed Albert Lewis to director of product management of wireless Internet location services, where he will be responsible for the company’s location services. Lewis previously served as director of marketing for Coyote Network Systems, where he developed and launched marketing campaigns promoting the company’s product line.
