LONDON-Wireless Internet-capable devices are set for explosive growth in unit shipments as the price/performance equation shifts over the next five years to accommodate the growing information, communication and entertainment needs of wireless users, according to a report from Strategy Analytics.
The report, “Wireless Devices for the Coming Multimedia Age,” predicts the global market for Internet-enabled wireless devices, including handheld computers, basic microbrowser phones, smart phones and next-generation multimedia phones, is set to increase from $10 billion in 2000 to $73 billion by 2005.
“The handheld market is set to register strong growth from mobile professionals and platinum travelers, but will increasingly attract consumers as we see a sharp increase in the desire to share, connect and have fun,” noted Nitesh Patel, an analyst with Strategy Analytics wireless data and computing strategic advisory service. “As ever-more consumers enter the market for handheld personal connectivity and entertainment tools, fundamental changes to the design requirements and price threshold will inevitably follow.”
