Companies hope to establish Cambridge as test bed for third-generation services

CAMBRIDGE, England-Interest group Cambridge3G was launched to establish Cambridge, England, as a leading test bed in Europe for the early rollout of third-generation mobile services.

The initiative is backed by Cambridge-based telecommunications companies including Analysys, 3G LAB, Cambridge Positioning Systems, Cambridge Silicon Radio, Smart421 and TTPCom. National operators BT, Orange and Vodafone plc are also backing the initiative, as well as equipment manufacturer Nokia Corp.

“There are compelling local and national economic reasons for encouraging this community,” said Edward Astel of 3G LAB. “The Cambridge telecoms business and university research community is in a unique position to influence the way worldwide standards, services and applications develop.”
