Nortel adds to Wings of Light portfolio in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain-Nortel Networks announced new Internet Protocol core network, base station and management offerings as part of its `Wings of Light’ strategy last week at the UMTS 2000 show in Barcelona, Spain.

The latest additions to the company’s portfolio of wireless Internet solutions are expected to be available during the next 9 to 15 months and include an IP core network solution for Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services; a new Nortel Networks e-mobility base transceiver station and advanced radio resource management for 3G networks; and Nortel Networks Preside for Wireless Internet, an integrated solution for network, service and customer management.

Nortel’s Core IP Network solution is expected to be generally available in the fourth quarter of 2001. It is designed to consolidate delivery of voice, video and data from multiple access technologies onto a single network. The 3G Core IP Network solution will support personalized services based on customer profiles.

Preside for Wireless Internet is a solution to speed time-to-service and time-to-profit for operators launching 3G wireless Internet services. The solution provides network, service and customer management for UMTS and other 3G wireless Internet solutions.

The company’s new compact Internet base transceiver station and radio resource management software, part of its e-mobility Wireless Internet access portfolio, addresses urban and suburban coverage requirements for UMTS operators with limited real estate for cell site deployment. The e-mobility Compact BTS, scheduled for commercial availability beginning in mid-2001, will be able to be plugged into existing transmission racks.

The company also announced its e-mobility Radio Resource Management software, which will complement the Nortel Networks e-mobility Internet BTS and core IP network by maximizing spectrum efficiency to deliver high capacity. In addition to high capacity, e-mobility Radio Resource Management improves reliability by reducing dropped calls.

In other Nortel Networks news, Nortel and Cambridge Positioning Systems signed a letter of intent to jointly develop location technology for 3G wireless networks.
