Southwestern Bell acquires GTE Wireless properties in Austin

Southwestern Bell Wireless acquired GTE Wireless in Austin, Texas, extending Southwestern Bell Wireless’ coverage to 32 of the top 50 markets in the United States, according to the company.

As a result of the acquisition, former GTE Wireless stores and agent locations in Austin will now offer Southwestern Bell Wireless service and re-brand accordingly.

“It’s an exciting time for change for the company and for citizens of Austin as we expand our reach to help more people stay connected,” said Dan Villanueva, a spokesman for Southwestern Bell Wireless. “We are committed to a seamless transition for our new customers and continued good service for our present customers.”

Southwestern Bell Wireless said it will continue its limited-time Nokia 5160 handset promotion to benefit Special Olympics Texas.

With a minimum donation of $20 to Special Olympics Texas, contributors who activate new wireless service for two years will receive an incentive package that includes a free Nokia 5160 phone, 500 free weekend minutes and free long distance from their home calling area.
