Sprint PCS expanded its all-digital network into Huntsville, Ala., and opened two new Sprint PCS Centers for consumers and businesses in the city. The new centers are at 700 Airport Road, Suite G, and in the Madison Square Mall on University Drive. To coincide with the company’s latest network launch, which will be managed by US Unwired Inc., Sprint is offering a limited-time offer to new customers in Huntsville. Those who sign up for plans from $30 and up will receive 1,000 free night and weekend minutes. Sprint said Huntsville joins the 300 metropolitan markets and 4,000 cities in the United States covered by the company.
Nextel Partners Inc. launched its four-in-one digital wireless service in the Alexandria, La., market, combining digital cellular, Nextel Direct Connect digital two-way radio, wireless Internet and text/numeric paging in one phone. The company said the service’s digital coverage area extends along the Interstate 49 corridor north from Alexandria to Shreveport, La., and south from Alexandria to Lafayette, La., with coverage continuing west from Lafayette on I-10 to the greater Beaumont, Texas, area. Donna LeSaicherre will lead the company’s launch in Alexandria as market sales manager. LeSaicherre will be responsible for managing the development of Nextel Partners’ local wireless coverage network and all direct and indirect sales efforts. Prior to joining Nextel Partners, LeSaicherre was a market manager with Dobson Communications.
OmniSky Corp. said its wireless Internet and e-mail service is now available for Handspring Inc. personal digital assistants, the Visor Platinum and Visor Prism. In addition, the company introduced a special holiday promotional campaign. Until the end of January, OmniSky is offering a holiday rebate of $200 off the price of all OmniSky wireless modems following six months of paid OmniSky service. Also, new buyers of Handspring’s Visor Platinum or Prism PDAs will get a $50 mail-in rebate when they purchase the OmniSky modem and service activation within 30 days. Existing Visor owners will get a $100 rebate if they upgrade to the Visor Platinum or Prism.
