Cellular One celebrates 10 years

DALLAS-Cellular One Group announced this month marks its 10-year anniversary-proof of the brand name’s staying power in a tumultuous industry.

“The combined efforts of Cellular One’s member companies, operating independently under one brand, have made a significant contribution to the growth of the wireless industry,” said Richard J. Lyons, the organization’s president. “I believe that this is a truly unique business model that newer brands in any industry can learn from.”

Coined by the American Radio Telephone Service in 1984, Cellular One got its start in the Washington area. By 1989, SBC Wireless Inc. and McCaw Cellular Communications Inc., now AT&T Wireless, recognized the potency of a well-known brand and formed Cellular One Group to manage and promote the Cellular One name nationwide.

Today, 42 companies in 337 markets, serving 12,000 cities and towns throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, operate under the Cellular One name, the organization said.

According to a Cellular One Group survey this year, the brand ranks only behind AT&T in terms of name recognition.
