Ericsson to spin off Bluetooth division

OXFORD, United Kingdom-The strategic importance of Bluetooth seems to have been recognized within Ericsson, the company that invented the technology. Ericsson has decided to pull the unit responsible for developing and marketing Bluetooth technology out of its troubled consumer business unit.

The company is still searching for a name for the new company but said this is the only aspect stopping the new Bluetooth unit from going public with a marketing strategy. Such a plan will include offering its technology to rivals such as Motorola Inc. and Nokia Corp., which it had found hard to achieve while buried within Ericsson’s mobile-phone business.

The new company, which may be open to outside investors some time in the future, hopes its new-found independence will enable it to attract and retain the engineers and marketing staff needed for this type of technology.
