Alltel awards Motorola Phoenix contract

Alltel Corp. awarded Motorola Inc. a third-generation CDMA 2000 1X contract for its Phoenix market, which is scheduled for commercial launch next year.

The financial details of the standards-based hardware and software contract were not disclosed. In October, Alltel gave Motorola a contract for its New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., markets.

Under the deal, Alltel will purchase Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector’s 3G-ready SC 4812 base stations and other hardware for about 200 cell sites in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

“Motorola’s roadmap to 3G allows us smooth migration with our networks, which in turn will allow us to provide our customers the types of wireless services and applications that they will be wanting next year and beyond,” said Chris Smith, Alltel’s executive vice president for the Network Services division.

“Motorola, through its strategic alliances, is developing a common, Internet protocol-based network architecture designed to integrate voice, data and multimedia communications,” said Fred Wright, senior vice president and general manager for Motorola’s Telecom Carrier Solutions Group.
