SAN FRANCISCO-With a second-quarter revenue rise of about $100 million from the year-ago period, handheld maker Handspring Inc. surpassed Wall Street estimates and looks to turn its first profit by the end of 2001.

The company reported an operating loss of 7 cents per share, compared with 12 cents a year ago, and had second-quarter revenues of $115.62 million against $15.79 million last year.

It anticipates third-quarter sales to rise to $117 million to $123 million and a per-share loss of 6 cents.
