Motorola Inc. signed a $130 million infrastructure contract with Maxis Communications Bhd to increase Malaysia’s network capacity to accommodate more than 3 million subscribers during the next three years. The deal allows Motorola to deploy its 3G-ready Horizon platform to urban and rural Malaysia. “The expansion program will allow us to continue to be the No. 1 leader in the market in terms of market share, quality and product leadership,” said Dato Jamaludin Ibrahim, chief executive officer of Malaysia-based Maxis Communications.
CHINA
Under a $30 million deal, Xinjiang Mobile Communications Corp. signed a contract with Nortel Networks to implement the fifth phase of the expansion of its GSM 900 wireless network. The company expects to add an additional 280,000 customers. “The current expansion by Xinjiang MCC, and the substantial increase in subscriber capacity, will create a strong and strategic platform for a whole new focus on the profitable delivery of advanced mobile services,” said Robert Mao, Nortel’s president and chief executive officer in China.
Cellular provider China Unicom ordered $9.8 million in infrastructure equipment for a network buildout from DMC Stratex Networks, DMC announced. The order includes equipment for the 7 GHz, 15 GHz and 18 GHz bands.
FINLAND
Tellabs said today it opened a new research and development center in Savo, Finland, which will focus on developing broadband access solutions for converged networks. “As a significant technology hub, Savo is an ideal location to expand our research and development efforts and help Tellabs deliver the latest broadband access solutions to our customers,” said Seppo Borenius, the company’s director of research and development in Finland.

Qualcomm Inc. announced it has shipped 20,000 OmniTracs C-Band units to Brazil’s Autotrac Comercio e Telecommunicacoes.
