KIEV, Ukraine-The biggest Ukrainian Mobile Communications carrier announced the launch of a GSM 1800 MHz network in February.
Viktor Leonchikov, UMC director for GSM network development said that besides Kiev, UMC plans for 2001 include the launch of GSM 1800 MHz networks in major regional centers. The carrier received a GSM 1800 MHz license in October 2000. It reported 500,000 subscribers in February and predicted the figure to grow to 1 million by the end of the year.
Golden Telecom currently provides GSM 1800 MHz services in the metropolitan area of Kiev and in Odessa on the Black Sea. In 2001, the carrier plans to launch a GSM 1800 MHz network in the city of Dnepropetrovsk.
