Kyocera taps OmniVision image sensor technology

SUNNYVALE, Calif.-OmniVision Technologies Inc., provider of highly integrated CMOS image sensors used in electronic cameras, announced its newest design will be used by Kyocera Corp., a mobile-phone manufacturer.

OmniVision’s OV6630 image sensor will be used on Kyocera’s new mobile-phone camera attachment, the Treva. OmniVision said it is working with several mobile manufacturers worldwide to supply the image sensor chip. “OmniVision is well-poised to be a leading supplier of image sensor chips to Japan’s mobile-phone market, a potentially large new market,” said Hank O’Hara, vice president of worldwide sales for OmniVision.

With the Treva, users can capture still images and store them in the memory of the phone. The images can then be displayed or transmitted to another mobile pone or an e-mail account. “We believe the ability to capture, display, transmit and receive images is a natural extension of the multi-function mobile phone, and we are seeing consumer acceptance and demand for this capability,” a spokesman for Kyocera Optical Division said.
