Compaq, SignalSoft, SnapTrack and WFI partner on location

HOUSTON-Compaq Computer Corp. has partnered with SignalSoft Corp., SnapTrack Inc. and Wireless Facilities Inc. to develop a location solution on one platform called the Compaq Discovery Location System, the company announced.

The Compaq Discovery Location System will help carriers comply with the Federal Communications Commission’s E911 Phase II mandate. It supports gpsOne position-enabled handsets based on Qualcomm Inc.’s Mobile Station Modem family of integrated circuits, as well as location-based information services, Compaq said. Sprint PCS and other U.S. carriers are expected to offer gpsOne-enabled handsets in the fall of this year.

Compaq integrated several components from each of its industry partners. SignalSoft will provide the location-based operating platform, including Location Manager, which operates as the mobile positioning center.

SnapTrack will contribute its SnapSmart position determining entity software, which uses a handset-based global positioning system receiver in conjunction with wireless-assisted GPS and hybrid position location wireless-assisted GPS technology to identify user location.

WFI will provide a range of network services including radio-frequency engineering, network architecture and Internet Protocol and data engineering, among others.

The Compaq Discovery Location System is hosted on a single Compaq NonStop Himalaya server.
