Sprint, Sanyo launch phone with color screen

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Sprint PCS and Sanyo Fisher Co. introduced the Sanyo SCP-5000, a clamshell-design handset featuring a full-color screen.

The two-inch, 256-color display includes backlighting for easier readability and allows up to 20 digital color photos to be downloaded then synchronized with phone book entries for an onscreen “Photo Caller ID” for select incoming calls. Users can also reserve five images for use as wallpaper on the screen.

In addition, the dual-band design-1900 MHz PCS and 800 MHz analog-features a “Web” button for one-touch access to Sprint PCS’ wireless Internet service, Spanish text and voice prompt options, electronic organizer, adjustable screen contrast and downloadable ring tones to supplement the 16 built-in four-cord melody selection.

The handset is expected to sell for $500, and includes a travel charger, serial data cable, CD-ROM software and a belt-clip holster.
