Powertel adds 100K subscribers

WEST POINT, Ga.-Powertel Inc., a wireless PCS provider that serves the southeastern United States, announced its preliminary financial and operating results for first quarter 2001.

Powertel said it expects its PCS subscribers to total 1,015,000, after adding 108,000 new subscribers during the quarter. The company estimated first quarter revenues to be $151 million, compared with $100.1 million for the year-ago quarter.

The company also said its net loss attributable to common stockholders will be $47.8 million, or $1.46 per share, better than its net loss of $52.9 million, or $1.74 per share, reported for the year-ago quarter.

On the other hand, Powertel expects its EBITDA (operating loss before non-cash charges) to be $16.8 million, much higher than the $600,000 reported for the first quarter 2000 and its capital expenditures are expected to be $34.8 million, more than double first quarter 2000’s reported $15.4 million.

Revenues, sales and EBITDA from Powertel’s joint venture with Eliska Wireless Ventures 1 Inc. are not included in theses preliminary results, but will be added to the company’s unaudited financial statements to be filed with the SEC, Powertel added.
