DoCoMo earnings strong

TOKYO-Japanese wireless operator NTT DoCoMo reported strong earnings for its fiscal year ended March 31. Net profit jumped 45 percent to $3 billion, compared with the previous year’s results, on the back of strong demand for the carrier’s i-mode wireless Internet service.

Total subscribers increased more than 22 percent to 36 million customers compared with last year, with 21.7 million subscribing to the i-mode service. The carrier continued to dominate the Japanese wireless phone market with nearly 60 percent of the country’s wireless customers subscribing to DoCoMo’s service.

The company said it expects the next year to have slower revenue and profit growth but plans to grow its market share to 80 percent over the next two to three years.
