Certicom to encrypt handheld devices

Mobile security company Certicom today released its movianCrypt, which the company touted as the industry’s most efficient, transparent data encryptor for Palm Inc.’s handhelds.

The encryption technology automatically safeguards personal or corporate information, protecting Palm users if their device is lost or stolen. Certicom said the release expands its product line to position the company as a security provider to top-tier business companies.

MovianCrypt is compatible with all Palm devices running on Palm OS 3.0 or above, and on all of Handspring Inc.’s Visor handhelds running on Palm’s 3.1 and above. In addition, the company said the product works with its virtual private network offering, the movianVPN.

Certicom said movianCrypt takes advantage of idle time to re-encrypt data; uses 128-bit key encryption; requires only 98K of memory; and features a simple installation process.

“Given the critical need for robust, user-friendly security on mobile devices and the compelling features of movianCrypt, we anticipate a positive response from users, executives and the corporate IT community,” said Rick Dalmazzi, president and chief executive officer of Certicom.
