ITU study group sets BICC protocols

GENEVA-The International Telecommunication Union group responsible for signaling requirements and protocols agreed July 2 on a second set of Bearer Independent Call Control protocols, which will, among other features, facilitate third-generation wireless communications.

The BICC protocols, which Study Group 11 of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector approved, are designed to enable the transition to next-generation server-based networks from today’s general public switching systems.

Utilizing the latest techniques in network design, which are built on a server, proxy and media gateway architecture, the protocols support all services now deployed on circuit-switched, Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Internet Protocol, including third-generation wireless, the ITU said. At the same time, BICC will not limit future introduction of innovative multimedia, multi-mode applications and services.

BICC Capability Set 2 provides the network signaling protocols for third-generation wireless, enabling a transcoder-free call to be established as a means to reduce costs while maintaining call features.

In its next phase of the BICC specification activities, Study Group 11 will address advanced service support and the involvement of additional proxies, including one for Session Initiation Protocol.
