Vodafone to delay 3G plans due to handset shortage

Vodafone Group plc said it might delay the launch of its third-generation network until 2003 due to a shortage of handsets. Vodafone confirmed its was cutting back the deployment of 3G base stations in the United Kingdom for this year from 1,200 to 750. The world’s largest wireless operator originally planned to launch 3G service based on UMTS in some markets by the end of next year.

“There is, despite what some manufacturers may say, a slip in the availability of handsets,” Vodafone Chief Executive Chris Gent told The Wall Street Journal Europe.

Sprint PCS files with SEC for debt offering

Sprint PCS filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell up to $4 billion of debt, preferred stock, common stock and other securities to finance the expansion of its nationwide network and upgrades to next-generation services.

AT&T Wireless, Amazon.com sign deal

AT&T Wireless Services Inc. signed a deal with Amazon.com allowing AT&T Wireless customers to shop for books, music and videos using their wireless phones. The service will include one-click ordering, recommendations, customer reviews and search capabilities.
