LONDON—German vendor Siemens has won a contract, worth about US$17.6 million, to design, install and integrate a GSM network and telecommunications services for rural areas of Oman. The deal with OmanTel is the latest in a recent string of successes for Siemens in the Sultanate of Oman.
The agreement also covers establishing an “integrated training and testing” center within Oman. According to a statement issued by Siemens, the center illustrates Siemens’ commitment to enhance the telecom sector in the whole Middle East region.
“The Middle East region represents a new strategic dimension for Siemens,” said Dr. Abdullah Tourbah, vice president, Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Networks for the region. “We are pursing a policy to evolve the region to be on a par with international telecom practices and quality of services. By trusting Siemens to significantly extend the GSM reach in the Sultanate and establish the training and testing center, OmanTel is pioneering the role of preparing the region to cope with the ever-increasing challenges in the telecom segment.”
