ARLINGTON, Virginia, United States—The U.S. Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) announced plans to split its trade association and its standards development organizations into autonomous entities.
As approved at TIA’s recent board of directors meeting, the association will spin off its standards development activities into a separate standards development organization (SDO), which will support service providers and manufacturers and offer technical assistance to TIA.
“We are separating this function of TIA so the standards development can serve the telecommunications industry more widely by having a global membership and reach,” said TIA President Matthew Flanigan. “Under our plan, all TIA members initially will have automatic rights to participate in the standards development activities without incurring additional dues, while other interested parties, worldwide, will have equal opportunities to be members of the SDO and provide for its governance.”
