TI ships C64x series DSP

NEW YORK-Texas Instruments has begun commercial shipments of its TMS320C64x Digital Signal Processor core, which operates at up to 600 MHz and consumes less than one watt of power, said Greg Delagi, vice president and manager of worldwide digital signal processing.

Customers using the new C64x series include Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, Scopus Network Technologies and Spectel Communications. Motorola and Spectrum Signal Processing are among the third parties developing products based on the new DSP core, which Texas Instruments announced in February.

Within the C64x category, the TMS320C6416 DSP is the only one available today that integrates voice and data co-processors onto a single chip, Texas Instruments said.

Geared to handle “the dense channel capacity of third-generation wireless base stations,” this DSP also features “low power dissipation . with the lowest possible cooling requirements,” TI said.

A single 600 MHz C6415 DSP can process up to 350 voice channels at 12.2 kilobits per second and 35 data channels at up to 384 kb/s.

The price starts at $95 per 10,000 units. Development boards and tools also are now available.
