TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo, the leading mobile carrier in Japan, and IBM Japan have jointly developed key technologies for streaming service over mobile phones, both firms announced on 18 September. According to the firms, users of the technologies will be able to see video content and stream the content over mobile phones smoothly without interruption.
One of these technologies will let users see specific portions of motion pictures by pre-registering some key words. The other technology will let users see streaming content without interruption due to changes in conditions.
NTT DoCoMo and IBM said they do not have plans to “immediately” implement the technologies on their commercial services. Instead, they are going to propose their technologies to an international standardization body called the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which has been working out the standards for streaming video for mobile services.
Both firms last December concluded an agreement to jointly develop multimedia transmission technology for 3G services.
