WASHINGTON—The FCC and bankrupt carrier NextWave Telecom are in final negotiation talks. There are conflicting reports as to the details of the agreement.
One report says plans indicate that carriers that bid for the NextWave spectrum in the re-auction would pay $10 billion to the FCC and $5.8 billion to NextWave. Other reports speculate the carriers would pay the FCC $10 billion and about $5 billion of that would be turned over to NextWave.
Michael Wack of NextWave issued this statement in response to the recent reports: “Since its formation in 1995, NextWave has consistently demonstrated its desire and commitment to enter the wireless marketplace, with viable plans for doing so, and the company operates on a daily basis toward that end. Consistent with its corporate responsibilities, it has always been NextWave’s policy to explore ideas that might lead to a consensual resolution of existing issues and allow the company to complete pending bankruptcy proceedings, and we will continue to fulfill that responsibility.”
