TOKYO—Qualcomm Inc.’s Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless application platform received a boost through the company’s deal with video game giant Sega Corp., which announced it will release its video game content and gaming technology to various wireless devices using the platform.
Users could see mobile Sega-based games as soon as Christmas.
“There is a major market for wireless gaming in Japan and we expect to see a similar trend in the United States,” said Ryoichi Shiratsuchi, Sega’s director of mobile communications. “To take advantage of these markets, Sega Corporation is aggressively teaming with major wireless companies worldwide, such as Qualcomm and its BREW initiative.”
In Japan, Sega currently provides Java-based games for Motorola Inc.’s iDEN, NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode and J-Phone’s J-Sky phones. In the United States, Sega previously announced a partnership with Palm to deliver content to Palm-based handheld computers and with Synovial Inc to bring Sega games to the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs.
