STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, the joint venture between Ericsson and Sony first announced earlier this year, began operations this week, aiming to more effectively compete with dominant handset vendor Nokia. The venture has 3,500 employees and plans to launch its first product next year.
