BUCHAREST, Romania—Hungary’s Westel began commercial General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) to its clients throughout country.

Westel’s GSM network is based on Ericsson system elements in about 70 percent of the country’s territory and on Nortel equipment in about 30 percent of the country. Therefore, Westel’s commercial GPRS service, using infrastructure supplied by Ericsson, launched on 8 March with about 70-percent coverage until the end of July.

The integration of Nortel’s radio network and Ericsson’s core system was completed at the end of July, allowing Hungary’s leading mobile operator to offers its GPRS service nationwide. The service ensures a higher speed for data communications, and its fee is based on data volume actually transferred.
