Motorola announces more layoffs

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.—Motorola Inc. says it will lay off 7,000 more workers as it announced a third-quarter loss of $1.4 billion, its third consecutive loss.

The job cuts will bring the total this year to 39,000 of its 147,000 work force.

Excluding various items, it suffered about $7.4 billion loss, according to the company.

The report approximated analysts’ estimates, which expected a 7-cents-a-share loss. Motorola says it does not expect a fourth-quarter profit.
