Standards body sets ‘global circulation’ standards

TOKYO-An international standards body agreed on methods to support the unrestricted movement of third-generation (3G) terminals, called global circulation. The sixth meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Working Party 8F for 3G matters said the standards will allow advanced personal services to be accessible while traveling outside a home network.

“One important obstacle to a successful launch of 3G systems and services has been clear away,” said Dr. Bernd Eylert, chairman of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Forum.

The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) also welcomed the news, saying it allows manufacturers to accelerate their plans to introduce 3G devices to the market.
