Telecom sector growth in China slowing

BEIJING—Revenues in China’s telecom sector reached 257.5 billion yuan (US$31.15 billion) in the first nine months of the year, a 12.5-percent growth from last year. In the first six months of the year, however, the sector’s revenue increased 25 percent, indicating that even in China, the telecommunications sector is not immune to global trends.

The slowing growth is mainly attributed to fixed-line operator China Telecom. China Mobile’s revenue grew 19.6 percent in the first nine months of the year to 97.81 billion yuan (US$11.83 billion). China’s second-biggest operator China Unicom, which offers the full scale of telecom services, saw revenue grow 53 percent to 24.48 billion yuan (US$2.96 billion).
