Telus tests voice portal for location services

BURNABY, British Columbia, Canada—Telus announced it is currently conducting a trial of a voice portal service that delivers location-based information on businesses, restaurants, events, movies and directions, as well as more personalized local information.

“This trial is an exciting development in Telus’ integrated voice, IP (Internet Protocol) and wireless solution strategy,” said Dan Delaloye, executive vice president and president of Telus Consumer Solutions. “We believe this service will provide consumers a practical tool to access Web information in a simple, easy way.”

The voice portal’s content is provided by Telus’ Web portals, myBC.com, Alberta.com and myTO.com, and the integration and hosting is provided by ViaVis’s KnowNow! location-based application suite. Telus said it will evaluate results of the trial in early 2002 and decide then on a commercial launch.
