European vendors snag Cingular contracts

DENVER, United States—Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens said they signed long-term contracts with U.S. carrier Cingular Wireless to supply significant portions of the carrier’s GSM/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)/Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) network.

Ericsson’s deal, which is valued at US$2 billion, and Nokia’s US$1 billion contract will cover core network infrastructure and radio access network equipment, operation and maintenance. Siemens won a US$500 million contract for network infrastructure delivery during the next three years. Siemens will also supply mobile phones.
