JAKARTA, Indonesia—SingTel Mobile is about to add a new application to its existing General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology and future third-generation (3G) services. The application, multimedia messaging services (MMS), will be developed in collaboration with Ericsson Cyberlab, one of the first vendors to provide standard, end-to-end facilities for the development and testing of MMS applications in Asia.
With MMS, SingTel’s users in Singapore can attach and send graphics, audio samples, images and video together with text messages composed on their mobile phones. Both companies will work with content developers to build applications that will enable users to receive rich multimedia content on their phones.
Hui Weng Cheong, SingTel’s vice president of consumer products, asserted that early development was the key to the success of any service rollout in today’s competitive environment. The carrier plans to begin offering the service to customers by the second half of next year.
