First online payment service for i-mode announced

TOKYO—Oki Electric Industry and Payment First plan to launch a debit payment settlement service based on the Internet Protocol for users of i-mode on 17 December. When launched, it will be the first Internet debit settlement service for i-mode, a wireless Internet access service provided by NTT DoCoMo.

The service, called Inter Debit Payment Service, initially will be offered for Fuji Bank’s online bank service users. Oki said the system’s users can settle their payments under a highly secure environment that protects confidential data, such as user account numbers, passwords and payment information. Oki and Payment First have been providing similar services for PC users since April 2001.

The Inter Debit Payment Service is based on a system standardized by the Japan Payment Promotion Association, an industry association. Payment First was established in June 2001 by Oki, NTT DoCoMo, NTT Data, NTT Communications and Microsoft.
