Nokia launches largest production base in China

BEIJING—Nokia officially inaugurated its largest production base in China on 20 December. Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications and 15 of Nokia’s component suppliers are located in the Xingwang International Industrial Park, part of the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Fifteen to 20 suppliers are expected to join the park in the coming years, increasing the park’s sales volume to 50 billion yuan (US$6 billion), half in export sales. IBM, Sanyo and RF Micro Devices have plants in the park.

Nokia plans to double its investment of 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) in the park and double its production capacity and research and development (R&D) efforts, creating more than 15,000 jobs.

The park’s area will also be doubled to 100 hectares, according to a memorandum of understanding that Nokia’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jorma Ollila signed with Beijing’s Mayor Liu Qi.
