South Africa’s newcomer targets 20-something market

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—The third network operator in South Africa announced that it will target the youth market with the launch of its latest package called Club Chat.

Cell C Marketing Director Themba Khumalo told reporters that the product will be the first “cellular lifestyle product” in the country aimed at the 16- to 25-year-old age bracket.

The package is based on a month-to-month contract period with no subscription fee, a discounted rate of 1.44 rand (US$0.12) per minute during peak hours and 0.70 rand (US$0.06) during off-peak hours with per-second billing and 20 free short message service (SMS) messages each month for the minimum spend of 78 rand (US$6.75) per month.

“This provides an excellent incentive for prepaid users to convert to the security of a contract, but (who) don’t wish to be locked into a long-term contract,” concluded Khumalo.
