CANNES, France—The GSM Association presented several awards at the 3GSM World Congress this week.
“Once again, our industry has surpassed itself,” said Rob Conway, chief executive officer of the GSM Association. “The sheer diversity, innovation and technological excellence demonstrated by all the entries made the choice of winners a supremely difficult task.”
This year’s winners were separated into four main categories:
- Technology Innovation: U.S-based Wireless Online won for best infrastructure of network solution product; and Japan’s NTT DoCoMo won for best wireless handset/terminal or handheld device.
- Applications and Services: Far EasTone of Taiwan took the award for best corporate wireless application or service; Codeonline of Finland won for best consumer wireless application or services; and Ireland’s Network 365 won best wireless application developer.
- Marketing and Promotion: Finland-based Sonera Corp. won for best television commercial; and Orange of France won for best marketing campaign.
- GSM in the Community: MTN Networks of Sri Lanka was presented with the Wireless Accessibility Award; and both Polkomtel SA of Poland and Ericsson of Sweden won the award for best use of wireless for emergency situations.
The GSM Association also named several Gold Roll of Honour Winners: George Schmitt, currently chairman and acting CEO of E.spire Communications Inc.; Mauro Sentinelli, managing director of Telecom Italia Mobile; and Hans Snook, former CEO and group managing director of Orange. In addition, the association’s Special Recognition Award went to Telecom Italia Mobile for M-Services and the Chairman’s Award was presented to NTT DoCoMo.
