TOKYO—NTT DoCoMo Inc. and its regional subsidiaries Tokai and Kansai said they will expand their respective FOMA next-generation mobile service areas in early March, with subsidiaries Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu launching FOMA services in major areas of their respective markets by April 1.
Following the launches, DoCoMo said the FOMA service will cover 60 percent of Japan’s population, with further expansion planned for later this year increasing coverage to 90 percent of all populated areas.
The Japanese wireless giant also reported it will begin selling a FOMA handset equipped for its i-motion video clip transmission service and a video phone next month. DoCoMo currently offers a video-phone-only handset for its FOMA service.
