Puerto Rico to see first Cingular TDMA-GSM overlay

ATLANTA, United States—Cingular Wireless signed a $500 million supply agreement with Nortel Networks for GSM/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) infrastructure upgrades in the United States, including Puerto Rico.

The agreement includes a TDMA-to-GSM upgrade for the Cingular network in Puerto Rico, the first complete overlay of that kind in the Cingular Wireless Network, Nortel said. Cingular expects to begin offering commercial GSM services in Puerto Rico in the second quarter.

Under terms of the agreement, Nortel will also continue to support Cingular’s growth needs in its GSM networks in North Carolina, South Carolina, coastal Georgia and eastern Tennessee for three years. The support will include the deployment of radio, core switching and intelligent networking equipment for GSM voice and GPRS data services.
