Sprint plans intercarrier messaging feature

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Sprint PCS said it plans to introduce an Intercarrier Messaging feature of its Sprint PCS Short Mail service, allowing customers to send and receive messages from customers of other service providers. Sprint PCS said the ability for other carriers’ customers to respond to Sprint messages would vary by service provider.

Rival carriers, including VoiceStream Wireless Corp., AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless, have announced similar services.

Wireless messaging solutions provider MobileSpring and VeriSign subsidiary Illuminet are jointly providing the intercarrier messaging solution to Sprint PCS.
