ORLANDO, Florida, United States—Lucent Technologies and Verizon Wireless will begin a Washington, D.C., area trial next month of a data-optimized, cdma2000 network.
The network, also known as 1xEV-DO, will provide “select business customers with secure mobile access to corporate applications such as e-mail and intranets at data transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps),” the companies said.
Lucent is supplying the infrastructure equipment for the network, designed to provide a segue into the introduction of data speeds faster than those now available on Verizon’s 1xRTT Express Network. By providing higher data capacity and throughput, the new 1xEV-DO network “complements the current rollout of 1x voice and packet data services,” Verizon said.
To enable the trial, Lucent will upgrade its commercial Flexent CDMA base stations with channel cards and software. It also will supply its Flexent Mobility Server to provide an open Internet Protocol interface to the data network.
AirPrime and Sierra Wireless personal computer modem cards will be used in the trial, as will the Compaq 1xEV-DO MultiPort Module. Compaq also will provide its EVO Notebook N600c for the demonstration project.
