Vimpelcom launches commercial GPRS operation

MOSCOW—Second-biggest Russian carrier Vimpelcom (BeeLine) launched its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) into commercial operation in April after several delays caused by a lack of clients.

Vimpelcom, which boasts more than 2 million subscribers, was the first Russian carrier to launch free promotional operation of a GPRS network last year.

The operator said the number of GPRS clients reached 8,000, and the monthly traffic is hundreds of megabytes.

Market experts said Vimpelcom tariffs are quite acceptable compared with foreign prices. One megabit costs US$0.25 and 5 kilobytes are granted free in the beginning of each connection. The transmission speed is up to 40 kilobits per second.
