VILNIUS, Lithuania—Lithuanian operator Omnitel has begun a short message service parking payment service, allowing postpaid subscribers to pay for parking with mobile phones.
Users send specific messages to a short number when wanting to pay for parking after placing stickers purchased from Omnitel in their front windshields. Inspectors then are able to check whether a payment SMS was sent.
Each city sets its own rates for the service. Drivers pay for the service at the end of the month when they pay for their mobile communications services. Omnitel plans to make the service available to prepaid subscribers in the future.
Mobile operators in Scandinavia and Estonia have implemented similar services.
